This site covers the catchment area of the Baviaanskloof River and surrounding Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve area, where ecological, agricultural and social systems are managed collaboratively in order to promote sustainable use of the landscape.

The promotion of sustainable use of the landscape through the balanced management of agricultural, ecological and social systems in the catchment of the Baviaanskloof River

History of Site: 

Livestock farming and small-scale cropping have been the main land uses for the last two-three centuries. More recently part of the area has been declared a nature reserve (Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve) and the Baviaanskloof was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. The collaborative network Living Lands consists of scientists and landowners in the western Baviaanskloof who seek to establish a living landscape with sustainable ecological, agricultural, and social systems.
