General Site Description: 

The Negev Highlands LTSER platform is located in the southern desert of Israel, within the municipal purview of a town called Mitzpe Ramon. This area is home to desert wineries, military territory used to train officers in orienteering skills, traditional grazing of goats and sheep, and several tourism operators. Har Negev Reserve (HNR) is a part of the central Negev Highlands. Having an annual rainfall of 80-100 mm; about 200 nights of dew and mean annual temperature 170-190C. HNR is characterized by high degree of geo-diversity induced by geological and geomorphological long term processes. Vegetation is mostly in a diffused spot pattern on the slopes and at higher cover in riverbeds. HNR cover an area of about 1700 km2 that is colonized by 500 documented species of plants and an additional of 150 undocumented species are estimated to live in the area. In addition, their are many small settlement and a University.

Purpose of Site : 

The LTSER platform focuses on an agricultural-tourism initiative called 'Desert Edge'. In order to develop a park in the area, to increase tourism. The project aim to promote the integration of tourism and agriculture in the desert environment while supporting natural ecosystem. The LTSER team identified that the main problem of this project is mismanagement of water flow. The LTSER team found that much of the problem stemmed from a lack of knowledge and experience in managing runoff systems in the Negev Highlands. The LTSER team together with the Drainage Authority found a solution to manage water flow as a part of design with nature. In parallel, ecological research create a model that describes the structure and function of the socio-ecological system. The researchers, together with stakeholders, identify trajectories to the benefit of the socio-ecological system.
